Lenny on how AI will impact product management
My reaction to Lenny Rachitsky's take that AI will come for the
Lenny published his take on how AI will impact product management, and it surprised me. He expects AI to get good at the most valued PM skills first, things like strategy and vision, while most of the people he polled assumed the low-level work would go first. His reasoning is that strategy work is mostly digesting a lot of information and coming back with a clear answer, and that happens to be the thing AI does best.
I've gone back and forth on it since reading. I've spent a good part of this year keeping custom GPTs updated and using Copilot with our repository in view, and mostly what I've learned is how much work it takes to give AI enough context to be useful at all. Our product strategy comes out of meetings and conversations that never end up anywhere AI can read them. Until that changes, I have a hard time seeing it do better strategy work than the people who were in the room.
The soft skills part of his argument felt true right away. As AI picks up more of my writing and analysis, more of my time goes to judgment calls and to helping my team make good decisions without waiting on me.
